After completing Head Drawing Phase 1 through Watts Atelier Online it was time to jump straight into Phase 2.

While Phase 1 was generally concerned with overall head structure and proportion, phase 2 focused more intently on the specific facial features (eyes, nose, lips and ears), drawing from casts and further reinforcing the concept of shadow mapping, edge manipulation and shape containment.

Many of these concepts took a little time for the ‘ah-ha’ moment to happen and the idea to stick, but with each successive exercise it became that little bit clearer and ingrained.

The phase rounded out with cast drawings from a male bust and a female bust, and drawing from a photo reference with each of these only taken to a two value / mid value lay-in stage.

It was during this phase that I began utilising forums more and found them particularly helpful with the broader student community great in terms of encouragement and for pointing out any deficiencies in the work that needed more attention.
