Every now and then at life drawing I like to try and do something a little differently to what I’m normally trying to achieve. Sometimes it works, more often than not it doesn’t, but I never let myself get too discouraged by the attempt.

There’s usually something there I can file in the memory bank for next time.

For this particular sketch of a 10 minute pose, I thought I’d try just hitting the page with the side of a Conté stick in sweeping gestures based on the abstract areas of tone I was seeing, rather than trying to consciously pick out the correct proportions and form.

I was pleasantly surprised by the result and while a few subsequent attempts may have been less than successful, I still try something a little different every now and then to see what happens.

Every now and then I might hit some gold.
