We had a new challenge at Portrait Drawing Group recently when we had Therese sit for us who as I understood it was from the island of Bougainville. Being Melanesian, she had very dark skin and tightly wound hair, the challenge being how to adequately portray this in a quick fire charcoal drawing.
I found this a good experience and enjoyed being able to work tone into the skin a little bit more that I had been able to in the past with light skin where I often would tend to think more in terms of line, rather than tone. Opened my eyes up a bit more in terms of what features and aspects I should be looking to render to the page.
