Something a bit different last week at the portrait drawing class.
Up until now (in my limited experience at least) it has been a case of drawing a single model for a couple of hours with the model changing their position slightly every 20 minutes or so. This meant (again, for me at least) that my first portrait could be considered a warm up, with the thought that by the final portrait I will have picked up a number of idiosyncrasies and unique details of the individual.
I generally find the final image is my best piece of the night. As the models are volunteers, their effective payment is being able to choose their favorite piece of art from each artist to take home with them. For this reason, it is rare to come home again with my last drawing of the evening.
This session was a bit different in terms of how it was structured. We were to be drawing a mother and her two daughters, interchanging after each 20 minute block. As a result, I couldn’t afford to wait until I was in the groove with a warm up image or two – I was starting afresh with each successive drawing.
It was good practice to hit the ground running and consider each illustration as though it was the first, last and one and only image.
