How do you know when to call it done.
This can seem like one of the hardest things to determine.
You can spend a lot of time creating something, only to get to the end and decided that it is not quite there yet and set out to continuously refine, refine, refine.
This is most likely a product of insecurity as the closer you get to the end of a project, the more critical you become of it. You begin to imagine all the things others are going to pick on, its a bad composition, its boring, its messy, there is no life, the colours are dull, the subject is dull, it doesn’t make any sense… I’m sure there are others.
The truth is that the next project you do will undoubtedly be better than the last, because of all the lessons you learnt from the last project.
Instead of continuously refining what is essentially done in a bid to unhitch your mind from all of its failings (and truth be known, you will probably always find something wrong with it if you look hard enough), move on to the next project and grow.
Being able to see your rapid progression over a number of pieces will do wonders for your enthusiasm and self esteem when compared to agonising over one solitary piece that never really feels like you quite got it right.
You need to create, so create.
Focus on creating from what is internal, from your own feelings, not from that which is external, reacting to what you think others might say.
It is your art, it can never be deemed to be wrong.
You may not have quite nailed it, but each piece you create will get you that one step closer to finding the pure essence of you.
Call it done.
Leap into the next project.
Explore and inspire.
Creating something from nothing is a gift.
Use it.
