Late last year my brother-in-law commissioned me to create a piece of art for an old mate of his whose father had passed away some years before. My brother-in-law spent a lot of time around the family growing up and wanted to surprise his mate with this gift because he felt it was the sort of thing that no one would think to do for him otherwise.

Reference photos were a little difficult to come by and the one I had to work from was taken with a flash and was quite blown out. For this reason I decided to go with an illustration rather than a painting and crossed my fingers that I deciphered enough detail to give a convincing likeness.

My brother-in-law’s response on sending him a photo set my mind at ease.

Thanks Mr Eden, you have done it again, it is perfect. I reckon old Brian is about to tell us a story or at least tell me I’m an arsehole. Both used to happen regularly.

A couple of weeks ago it finally arrived at his mates and his reaction was equally as appreciative. I was pretty happy to hear I’d nailed his fathers demeanor and in terms of having the desired effect, seems to have struck the right chord.
