My sister turned 40 this year and I asked her what she wanted for her birthday.

She has always been very supportive of my art and was happy I am finally taking it all a little more seriously.

‘I would like you to paint me a picture’ was her request. The only guidance she gave was she didn’t want a picture of herself, but otherwise it was an open brief.

I know in the design consultancy world, some form of constraints are usually better than none because you can often flail about with too much freedom but on this occasion I decided on a concept fairly early on.

I wanted to create a calming scene and like most of the images I develop, I wanted to leave a bit of the story for the viewer to disseminate for themselves – I feel like this one left a lot of room to ponder.
